East Side Church Of God
About Love & Fishing
Well, here it is…the month of intimacy and love. (For any men reading this, you now have less than 14 days until Valentine’s Day…just sayin!)
In John chapter 21, there is an account of an encounter that the disciples had with Jesus. The disciples were upset, and were kind of pouting. They didn’t know what to do because Jesus had died & they felt all alone. So they did what they always did. They went fishing. They fish all night & catch nothing. Jesus is standing on the shore, & they can’t quite recognize Him, because it’s dawn. They look out on shore and they see Jesus. Jesus says, “Catch anything?” Don’t you just love that? He knew that they had caught absolutely nothing.
You can see the disciples saying sarcastically-cause they are guys, “No, we didn’t.” And then Jesus says, well just try the other side of the boat. And I’m sure that went over really well. But they did it, and as they did that, in their minds they were probably thinking, “Hey didn’t this happen to us once before? Jesus! That’s who this must be!”
They catch a bunch of fish immediately, they get all of fish into the boat, one disciple counts the fish (153, in case you were wondering), Peter figures out that it’s Jesus, jumps out of the boat and runs to Him. Cool story. So...what’s the point?
This was the last time Jesus was going to be with His disciples before He went into Heaven. And what does He say to them? He says, I’ve got this fire going, some fish cooking and bread and I was wondering if you guys wanted to sit down one more night to hang out and just be guys. (That’s a loose translation of the Greek :D)
Isn’t that amazing? You would think that the Son of God on the last night with His disciples would be more theological; one more reminder of what we’re about; let’s go through the great commission one more time. No, He says let’s hang out, let’s bar-b-q, let’s tell stories! That’s what intimacy with Jesus is. Spending time with Him. Intimacy means “I have been with Jesus.”
In this month that is known as the month of love, I pray that we will make that commitment to be intimate with the Lord. To spend time with Jesus everyday and that through that time, we would grow in our relationships with Him and that He will guide our steps in righteousness.
Blessings,
Pastor Dave

Mark your calendars and plan to enjoy a weekend at Westbank!
One of the ways ordinary Christians can "rock this world" is with letters both to, and on behalf of, these people. The letters let the authorities know that the "West" is watching and is aware of the human right violations. Often this is enough to cause them to reconsider

Mexico 2011:
1 2010 article in the Prairie Post entitled, “Proposed Legislation a Concern” (A8) gave the impression that I am at odds with my C’s position on the topic of same-sex marriage. It suggested that I personally have no problem with performing same-sex marriages but my church does, and therefore I don’t do them. This was a misunderstanding by the reporter. I personally affirm East Side’s position on this issue.
If you happen to be at a discussion around the coffee tables please be a voice to assure people that we are not at odds, and nor does my position differ from that of the church. Thank you!
